If only I could get onto the Sim!

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

A few years back The Season's Story hunt was all the rage in SL.  I was one of its fans.  But due to time factors and other things, the group behind this hunt disbanded and the hunt ended.  A few people from that group created a new event in the spirit of Season's Story and called it Arcade Gacha.

Arcade Gacha or more like GOTCHA!  I love and loathe Gachas in SL.  Gachas are little quasi-gambling machines where you put money and hope to get a good prize.  Mainly a rare.  Which in the picture above the rare is a beautiful little cottage for your avatar.  Lately I haven't been doing much in SL but I do try to attend this event.  And I spend too much money at it.  But how can anyone resist?  Look at another vendor offering victorian treehouses!

If home items aren't your thing, there are plenty of vendors offering fashion items, clothing and avatar skins/hair.  Pets are very popular as well.  The popular pet to collect this fall are Shibu Inus.  But if you really want to be one with the animals, there is a gacha specializing in Raccoon Avatars.

There is so much more available.  So if you have time during September try to get on the sim and buy!  See the rest of the vendor offerings HERE.

Secret!

This is an advertisement for a popular store in Second Life called The Secret Store.  I've loved all their clothing for awhile now. Unfortunately, my VR inventory is exploding and I have a serious moratorium against buying anything new.

As I've noted at New World Notes, this is the Second Life I see when I'm in world.  Its a place of sophisticated VR art and items and motivated people doing what they love.  Unfortunately that isn't the SL most people see when the read about it in the local news or on TV.  They still see SL being a backwards place with lousy graphics and sleazy people.

And if they do by chance see anything like this, the world is set up that getting started is hard to conquer.

The Arcade

Second Life was the first program that got me into massive multi-player worlds. In fact, I think I found SL so easy to learn because I was not a gamer. So the arcane UI was not a hinderance. It did however make learning WoW's UI a torturous experience. Anyway games come and go but I always find time to wander a bit around SL. A lot of people find the place daunting and unfriendly but to people willing to stick out the learning curve it becomes more like "Cheers". Fall is the best time in Second Life. People are starting to gear up for the holidays and the major shopping events and hunts begin all over the grid. Right now the place for SL hipsters to be is The Arcade Gacha Event.

The Gacha events have taken up the slack of the much missed and very much loved Seasons Hunt event. Unlike treasure hunt events, Gacha events are a bit like going to Atlantic City. You put a bit of money into a slot machine and win various different prizes. It can be addictive. Especially for popular items. The Arcade Gacha Event is set up like an old Victorian, Atlantic City pavilion. It is filled with little slot machines which contain numerous variations of prizes that consist of furniture, clothing, knick knacks and avatars. The big hit of this event is Beetlebones' Hamster.

Beetlebones Hamster-002

This adorable hamster is a mesh based avatar that a player can wear. It comes in various colors. The price to play and win a coveted color is 100L (around a $1 real money). So far, I have only 4 colors.

The Arcade event is extremely crowded and I haven't been able to get back after my first visit. But I will be heading back to bet on more hamsters and other fancies.

For those interested, Second Life will be coming to Steam soon. There are some changes being made to accomodate this new partnership. Perhaps it will even out the steep learning curve. Who knows? If it does, then you too can be a hamster.

This video was showcased on Shopping Cart Disco.  It is a time lapse machinima from an SL designer creating a lingerie set.  Its amazing and the it shows just how much work goes into these digital pieces of avatar wear.

Ball Joint Twist

Friday, January 1, 2010

The styles of avatar have changed considerably since I first entered SL.  When I stepped in world about 3 years ago, the average female avatar was amazonian in height, extremely thin, and a bit cartoonish.  My own avatar was created as a counterpoint to that look.

For about a few months, I looked close to unique.  But it seemed I was just a bit ahead of the ball curve on realism.  Now more avatars are around my height, no longer quite as thin and celebrate different facial types.  Although SL is still overwhelmingly caucasian in appearance, there are more skins being offered that support different ethnicities.

Still I'm on the outer edges of fashion in avatar style.  Avatar fashion has moved away from the super model look and into something more strangely fascinating.

The picture above is from Blastmilk.  Blastmilk specializes in photography of Ball Joint dolls.  These dolls are popular in Asia, particularly Japan, and have a slightly creepy air.  They seem to encompass realism (in their range of expressions and poseable bodies) and fantasy (overly large eyes, baby round faces etc).  I never realized that these dolls had a large influence on new avatar styles in SL until a few days ago.  I was paging through an issue of "Coilhouse" and read an article about doll maker Marina Bychkova.

Seeing this particular photo of her dolls struck me as familiar.  Lately some of the SL blogs have been commenting on strange facial features in avatars lately...such as eyes that were too far apart and lips that were overly large.  The new avatar fashion in SL take after these porcelain ball joint dolls.

Its an overly stylized look to be sure.  And it doesn't quite look human.  Which could account for why many find the look creepy.  Truthfully avatar fashion is a tricky symbiotic relationship between skin designers and customers.  People naturally find large eyes and large lips attractive.  The skin designers cater to this genetic preference.  But left on their own, would the average VR resident create a BJ looking avatar?  I don't think so.  If anything it looks as if one designer (not sure who at the moment) referenced Bychkova's work and created a skin/shape that mimics her work.  And then the look took off from that point.

Do I like it?  No, it isn't my cup of tea.  I've never been fascinated by dolls, even when I was a child.  And again, I'm a little put off by the BJ dolls in general.  But I can't deny that they are an art.  And since now there is some RL reference for this look in SL, I don't find the avatar copy quite so horrific.

The winds of fashion...so to speak.

Flower and Willow

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Japanese culture has a huge influence over the style of Second Life.  Which is surprising considering that Japan has a small number of users in world compared to the U.S. and other countries.  But their Kawaii designs and spare traditional style are perfect fits for VR.

Most Japanese designers are part of the Kawaii crowd.  They have sims filled with curious and adorable animals.  Their avatars look like anime kids come to life, complete with oversized eyes and big feet.  Their clothing designers are some of the most popular in SL.  Their clothing stores consist of basics with an eye for textures.  They lean toward wholesome looks with slightly cheeky touches here and there.

Another popular culture infusion is the Flower and Willow world.  From what I've observed the recreation of Geiko culture seems to be a western obsession.  But one that is supported by many Japanese designers who create period correct traditional furniture and clothing.

The Flower and Willow world in SL is a curious mixture of Role Play, Fantasy, Anthropological correctness, and show business.  Entering the world of SL Geisha is easier than in RL.  But that doesn't mean that rules are totally relaxed.  An SL resident cannot just barge straight into an SL Geisha party.

The nicer affairs are strictly invitation only.  So to partake in these events, a resident must join the mailing lists of the various Okiyas in world.  Once a new patron gets into the swing of attending public events, the SL Geiko and Maiko will be sure to add the patron to their personal mailing lists.  And these will almost certainly be for smaller, more exclusive affairs.  Many Ochayas will also be certain to keep track of patrons as well.

As in RL, Geisha parties are whimsical.  They contain jokes, poetry, stories, gossip, music and dancing.  The Geisha and Maiko are charming enough to make even the shyest of patrons feel comfortable.  The parties are also set in some of the most beautifully designed sims and buildings in all of SL.

In RL, this world is almost an exclusive domain for powerful men.  But in SL the parties are always a good mix of male and female patrons.

If you are interested in exploring this beautiful subculture in SL, you can start by looking up the various okiyas in-world.

These are some of the current okiyas holding events:
Nakanoshima Okiya
Blue Lotus Okiya
Pontocho Okiya
Amatsu Shima Okiya
Little Yoshiwara Okiya
Mitsuba Okiya
Karyukai Okiya
Nakamura Okiya
Furries and Nekos have their own special Okiya:  Maneki Neko Okiya

Note:  Patrons of various avatar types are welcome at all Okiya events unless they are a part of traditional RP sims.  Which means they will require human avatars in traditional dress.  However most are very relaxed on rules.

Most of the Geiko and Maiko speak English and they use translators.  So don't be frightened if they greet you in Japanese.  If you attend many of their events, you will soon be comfortable with Japanese greetings.

If you are interested in becoming an SL Geiko, it is best to start as a patron.  Then you can observe the atmosphere and learn what is required of the role.  To become an SL Geiko is a time consuming activity and it requires a lot of commitment.  So a prospective Geiko must decide if she wants to dedicate most of her SL time to this job.

Don't be intimidated by the sims surrounding the okiyas in your initial information search.  Everyone is very friendly and helpful so it won't be long before you can attend a party or Maiko debut.

Fashion for the Rest of the Avatars

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

I'm not one of those glamorous avs that keep up with the latest designers or styles in SL.  I've only just learned to layer things.

So why start a series of style posts?  Well, I figure there should be something for the regular folks out there.  You know, the weekend casuals.  The people who aren't into the glamorous or farfetched.  Perhaps even the more than slightly conservative.

So the pic above is a quick outfit pulled together from old and new adds to my inventory.

Hair - Kurotsubaki - hair dia 7
Eyes - Pulse - Poe
Skin - Second Skin Labs - Evie
Cardigan - Nylon Outfitters - Chinese Florals
Tank - Fishy Strawberry - Poisonous Lotus top
Pants - Gisaci - Journey Tweed
Shoes - Armidi - Vidalia Pumps

All of these designers are easy to find using a quick search.  Just type in their names and their store lists will pop up.  Try to visit their main stores, because those will always have the most inventory. Many of the sims where they establish their flagships are destinations in their own right. So take a look around if you like the surroundings.

Happy Clothes shopping.
